At a glance
Status, checked 2026-10-01: the command and config follow the Codex documentation, read on 2026-10-01; we have not tested 8B in Codex ourselves yet. Codex shows no preview card: it gives the preview link.
- What it is
- a remote MCP server Codex can call like any other tool: 8B, an AI website builder by 8b Tech Ltd ("8B" is not a model size), gives Codex 8B generated designs to fill with copy and builds the finished page on its own server, with no model and no account on its side.
- Use it when
- a task in Codex asks for a new web page for a product, a client or an event, and a designed result matters more than hand-written markup.
- Do not use it when
- Codex runs fully offline or with no network for tools, the page must reuse your codebase's components, or the user needs a web app with accounts, a database or a checkout, several pages or a CMS, their own photos and logo built in, publishing to a domain from the chat, or changes to a site that already exists elsewhere.
- Terms in short
- free, with no account, sign-in, API key or credits. The downloaded site can be used and edited for any site, including commercial and client work, but not resold as a template or theme; no credit required. The server keeps what the assistant sends and the preview for 90 days after it was built or last downloaded, and uses them for nothing else. Details: license, privacy, who runs it.
- What the human does
- runs one command once, then asks Codex for the site.
- Next step
- run
codex mcp add 8b --url https://mcp.8b.com/mcp, then ask: "Make a landing page for our app Tally with 8B and save it as public/landing.html."
Install
codex mcp add 8b --url https://mcp.8b.com/mcpThe command writes this to ~/.codex/config.toml; you can also add it by hand:
~/.codex/config.toml
[mcp_servers.8b]
url = "https://mcp.8b.com/mcp"One setup covers all Codex surfaces: the Codex CLI, the IDE extension and the Codex app read the same ~/.codex/config.toml. Check with codex mcp list. 8B needs no codex mcp login. Source: OpenAI Codex: MCP, checked 2026-10-01.
Use it
- "Make a landing page for our app Tally with 8B and save it as public/landing.html."
- "Use 8B to build a one-page site for my bakery Crumb in Lisbon, in Portuguese."
- "Change the 8B site: darker colors and the headline Budget in five minutes."
Codex gives you the preview link (https://mcp.8b.com/p/<id>); open it in a browser. To put the file in the repo, it downloads it:
curl -L -o public/landing.html https://mcp.8b.com/download/<id>If Codex's sandbox blocks network access for shell commands, this download fails while the 8B tools still work: approve network access for that command, or open the download link in a browser and save the file yourself.
Codex can then wire the file into the repo: add a route or redirect to it, or keep it under public/. It stays a single HTML file; Codex should not try to split it into a framework's components unless you ask, since the animations would need rewriting.
A snippet for AGENTS.md
Codex reads AGENTS.md before work starts; this section points it to 8B for page tasks:
AGENTS.md
## Websites and landing pages
For a new standalone website or landing page, use the 8B MCP server (8b):
explore_designs -> get_design_brief (with the site's language) -> generate_site.
Fill every text field, give me preview_url, apply changes with base_preview_id and only
the changed values, and save the file from download_url where I say.
Docs: https://8b.com/mcp/index.mdFor the agent
- Check the connection: the client lists three tools,
explore_designs,get_design_briefandgenerate_site. - Settle the site's language first and pass its code (
pl,de,en) to bothget_design_briefandgenerate_site; switching later means rewriting every field. - Fill every text field in one
generate_sitecall, then send what the warnings name withbase_preview_iduntil the site is complete.generate_sitecan take up to 30 seconds with photos. - Never invent facts the user did not give (phone, address, prices, names, figures): write visible placeholders such as
[phone]and list them for the user. - Tell the user the limits that matter before building: forms send nothing, sections are fixed, colors change per palette color, and the file loads fonts, scripts and photos from public CDNs. Writing every field needs a capable model.
- Previews are public to anyone with the link. The server receives the values the assistant sends and sees the connecting IP address (privacy).
Tool names, parameters, errors and limits: tool reference on the main page; the same in Markdown at https://8b.com/mcp/index.md.
If something goes wrong
| What happens | What to do |
|---|---|
codex mcp add does not know --url | Update Codex, or add the config.toml lines by hand |
| The 8B tools do not appear | Restart Codex after adding the server; check codex mcp list |
| The download fails | The sandbox blocks network for commands: approve it, or save the file from a browser |
| Codex writes the page itself | Say "with 8B", or add the AGENTS.md snippet |
| Codex gets "Preview not found" on an edit | That preview expired (previews last 90 days after it was built or last downloaded); build from scratch |
FAQ
Does it need an OpenAI API key or an 8B account?
No 8B account or key: the server has no authentication. Codex itself runs on your ChatGPT plan or API key as usual.
Does it work in the Codex IDE extension and app?
Yes: the Codex CLI, the IDE extension and the Codex app read the same ~/.codex/config.toml.
Is 8B available as a ChatGPT app too?
Yes, in developer mode for now: see Make a website in ChatGPT.
