Small Talk

Spring term

Starts March 9 · evenings and Saturdays

Two people talking over coffee at a white table
A student with curly hair and glasses, mouth open in surprise, hand raised mid-sentence

Wait, how do you say that?

A language school for curious grown-ups. Six languages, evening groups of eight, and lessons built from the conversations you actually have.

Every big conversation starts with small talk. The weather, the train, the coffee, the barber. We teach the ordinary, so the extraordinary has somewhere to go.

  • ¿Qué tal?
  • Lovely weather, huh?
  • Ça va ?
  • Come va?
  • Tudo bem?
  • Wie geht's?
  • Is this seat taken?
  • O-genki desu ka?

The syllabus is your Tuesday

Twelve weeks, twelve ordinary situations. You learn what to say at the barber long before anyone mentions the subjunctive.

  1. A smiling barista hands a red cup across the counter
    Week 1

    Ordering coffee

    “Un cortado, por favor.”

  2. A traveller waits on a platform as a red and yellow train pulls in
    Week 2

    The train is late

“C’est bien le quai pour Lyon ?”

  3. A couple browsing a stall at an outdoor market
    Week 3

    Haggling at the market

    “Quanto costa questo?”

  4. A barber trims a customer's hair in a dim shop
    Week 4

    Small talk at the barber

    “Só um pouco nas pontas.”

  5. Three friends laughing over dinner and wine
    Week 5

    Dinner with strangers

    “Was empfehlen Sie?”

  6. Two friends with backpacks study a paper map on a city street
    Week 6

    Asking the way

“Sumimasen, eki wa doko desu ka?”

Then the doctor, the landlord, a first date, a job interview, a polite complaint and a wedding toast. Pick your language

Every course runs ten weeks, two hours a week, with eight people at most. From your very first hello to arguing about films.

    Mateo Ruiz

  • Rafael, smiling, in front of a white backdrop

    Olá!

    Rafael Costa

After class Where’s everyone?

Clubs are free for students and five dollars for friends who just want to listen.

  1. Spanish supper club

Casa Nuno, 2 Example Avenue. Three courses and one rule: no English after the starter.

  2. French film night

At the school. We watch it twice: once with subtitles, once arguing about what happened.

  3. Italian market walk

The Saturday market, 9 am. Buy lunch for the group, ordering only in Italian. Rosa pays for the coffee.

  4. Pub quiz in German

Linden Tavern, 7 pm. Six rounds, one team per table, and points for the best wrong answer.

Not sure where to start?

Three small questions. Answer honestly; nobody is listening. Or skip them and come to a free trial: we place everyone in ten minutes.

A stranger at the bus stop says hello in the language you want to learn. You…
A waiter rattles off today’s specials. You…
Someone tells a joke in that language. You…

Answer all three and we will suggest a group.
