One arch, 164 seats, nowhere to hide

The microphone waiting in front of the bare brick wall of the stage
The brick arches of the corridor, strung with warm bulbs

Nine metres

No seat is further than that from the mic, so the comic can see you. They will.

The 21:12

A train rolls over the arch every night at 21:12. Good comics learn to land a punchline on it.

Low brick vault

The ceiling throws every laugh back into the room. A half-full Tuesday sounds like a sold-out Friday.

House rules (the real ones)

We printed the polite version once. Nobody read it. Here is what actually happens in the arch.

  1. No heckling

    Heckle at your own risk

The comic has the microphone, the lights and ten years of comebacks. You have half a pint.

  2. Phones on silent

    Phones in the pouch

We lock them in a pouch at the door. The jokes stay in the room, and so do you.

  3. Sit anywhere

The front row gets talked to

Seats are unallocated, so choose like an adult: the front row is part of the show.

  4. Arrive on time

    Latecomers become material

Walk in after the MC starts and the MC will want to know exactly where you’ve been.

  5. Laugh if it’s funny

Laugh at the new ones too

New material is fragile. A kind laugh on a Wednesday builds the hour you’ll pay to see in May.

Fresh Meat five minutes, one mic

Every Monday twelve people walk up to our mic for the first, second or fiftieth time. Some are on posters now. Some are accountants. Both are fine.

  1. Send us your name

Fill in the form or email openmic@snort.example. No clip needed for a first spot.

  2. Get your Monday

Usually within three weeks. You get the date, the running order and the MC’s phone number.

  3. Do five minutes

A light at the back comes on at four and a half. When it does, say goodnight. Bring a friend; we’ll bring the rest.

They bombed here first

Every one of them died on our Monday stage at least once. Then they came back the next Monday.

  1. Mae Tully, curly hair, in a dark cardigan

    Mae Tully

First Fresh Meat in 2015: four minutes of silence. Now on her third national tour.

  2. Jess Okoro laughing in a black T-shirt

    Jess Okoro

Forgot her closer in 2017 and did ten minutes about forgetting it. Now writes for television.

  3. Carla Venn in a black hat against a brick wall

    Carla Venn

Heckled by her own dad in 2016. Now a regular on the radio panel shows.

  4. Omid Farr resting his head on his hand

    Omid Farr

Lost a roast battle to a nineteen-year-old in 2018. Now hosts our Sunday Roast.

  5. Tariq Shah in a black and white portrait

    Tariq Shah

Fell off the stage mid-punchline in 2014 and kept the bit. Now sells out the big rooms.

Ask about a date

Overheard at the bar

Asked before

Answered with a straight face, for once.

Is there an age limit?

Every show is 18+ and we ask for ID at the door. Some of the language would make your nan blush. Some of it would make her laugh.

Are the seats allocated?

No. Doors open half an hour before the show and it’s first in, first seated. The front row is a choice, not a punishment. Mostly.

Will I get picked on?

Only if you sit in the front row, arrive late or wear a hat indoors. Sit in the middle and you’re safe, unless you laugh like a goose.

Is the arch accessible?

Yes: a step-free entrance from the wharf, four wheelchair spaces beside the stage, an accessible toilet and a hearing loop. Tell us when you book.

Can I swap or refund tickets?

We swap tickets to another night up to 24 hours before the show. If we cancel, you get your money back the same day.

Can I eat there?

Fries, toasties and pickles from the bar until 21:00 and again after the show. Nothing that crunches during a set, please.
