We design gardens for the climate we actually have: wet winters, dry Augusts, and clay that needs working before anything will root. Then we come back and look after them, because a planting plan only proves itself in its third summer.

    We dig a hole, look at what comes out, and test how fast it drains. Everything else waits for that.
