Showroom open Monday to Saturday, 9 to 5:30.

Every wall starts as a grid.

TEGEL is a tile shop and bathroom studio in Belfast. We stock 1,400 wall and floor tiles, draw the setting-out for every room we sell to, and send our own fitters to lay it.

One tile, three walls

Move every other row and the same tile changes character. The bond also decides how many tiles you cut.

  1. Stack bond

Joints straight both ways. Calm, modern, kind to big squares.

  2. Half bond

Every other row moved by half a tile: the brick pattern of metro walls.

  3. Third bond

Rows moved by a third. The safe choice for long porcelain planks.

What a tile is made of

Six bodies, six behaviours. The table says where each can go; the showroom lets you stand on them.

Four rooms, one grid

Bathrooms we drew, supplied and tiled this year. Each began as a setting-out plan on squared paper.

  1. Stranmillis

Blue chevron in the shower, hexagon cement on the floor.

  2. Holywood

A 1930s room kept whole; its floor re-laid in blue and white.

  3. Lisburn Road

Slate-grey porcelain in third bond around one marble basin.

  4. Cregagh

White metro in half bond, black grout, a floor of small squares.

Five house glazes

Our own colours, dipped for us by a small pottery in Stoke-on-Trent. Every one comes as a square, a metro and a hexagon.

  • Small teal-blue square tiles reflecting a white cloud

    Cobalt

Deep blue that darkens where the glaze pools at the edge.

  • Yellow glazed tiles with raised flowers and grey leaves

    Saffron

A warm yellow that holds its colour in a north-facing room.

  • Narrow red tiles laid vertically behind a shelf with two pump bottles

    Signal

Pillar-box red with a gloss deep enough to show the brush.

  • A wall of white bevelled tiles crossed by a zigzag of red tiles

    Chalk

Not quite white, so grout of any colour reads as a line.

  • A kitchen splashback of black metro tiles above a dark worktop

    Ink

Blue-black gloss that turns a small room into a deep one.

Laid by our own fitters

Five fitters on the books and no subcontractors. They work from the same setting-out plan you saw in the showroom, so the cuts at both ends of a wall match.

How a job runs

Two years' guarantee on every wall and floor we lay.

From a floor plan to a finished wall

Five steps, in the order we work. You can stop after any of them and take the plan with you.

  1. 1

    Bring the measurements

A sketch with wall lengths, windows and doors is enough. Or we measure for £40, refunded with your order.

  2. 2

    We draw the setting-out

Where the first full tile sits, where the cuts fall and how many boxes it takes, on squared paper, in half an hour.

  3. 3

    Samples go home

Up to five pieces, free. Look at them in your light, in the morning and in the evening.

  4. 4

    You order once

Boxes by the square metre with a tenth spare for cuts. Unopened boxes come back within 60 days.

  5. 5

    We lay it

Our fitters work from the same plan. Most bathrooms take four to six days, grout included.

How many tiles do I need?

Measure each wall or floor, multiply, and add a tenth for cuts and breakages, or a seventh for diagonal and herringbone. Bring the numbers in and we check them against a setting-out plan.

Can I return what I don't use?

Unopened boxes, within 60 days, with the receipt. Tiles cut to order and clearance lines cannot come back.

Do you deliver to Great Britain?

Yes, in three working days on a pallet. Northern Ireland is next working day, and Belfast addresses can choose a two-hour slot.

Which tiles can go on a shower floor?

Anything rated R10 or higher for slip: most porcelain, terracotta and our matt cement tiles. Glossy wall tiles stay on the walls.

Do I have to use your fitters?

No. Plenty of builders buy from us, and so do people who tile their own. The setting-out plan comes with the order either way.

Which grout colour should I choose?

Matching grout hides the grid; contrasting grout draws it. Choose with the sample on your wall, not under shop lights.

Come and stand on them

Every tile we sell is laid on a wall or a floor in the showroom, next to a table of squared paper and a kettle.
