Book a blind session

Every scent waits on a paper strip, without a name.

You smell four strips at a time. No bottles, no prices, no labels on the table. Only once you have chosen by nose do we turn the card and tell you what it is, who made it and where it grew.

Origins Before the Bottle

Grown farfrom the shop, visited in person /

  • Cupped hands holding freshly picked jasmine flowers
    Jasmine sambacFayoum, Egypt · August
  • Dry cistus scrub on a coastal hillside at dusk
    LabdanumAndalusia, Spain · July
  • Baskets heaped with rose petals during a night harvest
Rose centifolia, picked in the darkIsparta, Türkiye · May
  • A field of pale purple irises in bloom
    OrrisTuscany · every third summer
  • Cedars on a hillside wrapped in mist
Atlas cedarMiddle Atlas · fallen wood
  • Cones of sea salt drying in grey salt pans

We buy from six growers and distillers we have stood beside. When a harvest is poor, the scent that needs it simply waits for the next one.

No Window, No Sign

The shop is one room up a stair in Leith.

There are 41 scents on the shelf at the moment, from eleven small houses and our own bench. None of them is on display. They live in a cabinet of numbered drawers and come out one strip at a time, so the room smells of nothing until you ask.

The Accord

Materialand scentare one thing /

A finished bottle of amber extrait on the bench
A bead of amber resin swelling from a cut in pine bark

A perfume is not a picture of a place. It is a little of the place itself: resin bled from bark, petals pressed before noon, a root left to dry for three summers.

Once it leaves the bench, a scent carries its origin without describing it. That is why we never print the story on the label, and why you meet it on a strip first.

Now Resting

Small batches age in the dark before they are bottled. This is what sits on the back shelf this month, and when it may reach the strips.

  1. Batch 23

    Low Smoke

    Resting · week 5 of 8

Birch tar is settling into the labdanum. Bottling planned for late November.

Brown dropper bottles and a jar on a wooden shelf
  2. Batch 37

    Salt Iris

    Filtering

Chilled and filtered twice; the orris has turned soft and powdery, as it should.

Old labelled glass jars on a wooden counter
  3. Batch 41

    Not yet named

    Forming

A green fig trial. Three drafts on the bench; one of them may survive the winter.

A row of brown glass bottles on a lit shelf in the dark

Noses

Three people choose what goes in the cabinet. None of them sells on commission.

Questions

Asked mostoften atthe table /

What happens in a blind session?

Fifty minutes at the table with a host and a dozen strips. You keep the ones you return to; we reveal names, makers and prices at the end. A session costs £25, taken off any bottle you buy.

Do I have to buy anything?

No. Many people leave with a card of numbers and nothing else. The strips you choose are yours to take home.

Can I smell by post?

Yes. The Blind Set sends six sealed vials with numbered cards, so you can do the same ritual at your own table.

Where do you ship?

Within the UK and the EU, in recyclable card. Extraits travel as liquids, so we pack them by hand on Mondays.

Can I return a bottle?

Unopened bottles within 30 days. Opened ones we cannot sell again, but we will swap them for a set of samples.

The Blind Set

Six vials of 2 ml, numbered and sealed.

A card inside names them only when you tear it. Smell for a week, keep notes, then open the card, or never open it at all.
